Rochester area : Rochester is a conservative community nestled in a valley with a population of approxamately 90,000 at best guess.The city itself provides a 6600 hundred acre refuge for Giant Canada geese making the situation unique.The geese have a tradition here and are very protected by the community.From feeding them by hand with corn for 75 cents a cup from old newspaper dispensers at Silver Lake,to the city symbol,you can even purchase Goose Poop Art at a local store.Given this situation you can imagine that the appetites of thousands and thousands of Geese staging on the lake in the center of town are never satisfied by a few cups of corn each day.Once or twice each day these Geese break out of the refuge for a meal in the surrounding corn and soy bean fields.Now the action starts,the birds break out on generally all sides of town and fill the sky.This daily spectacle lends itself to some of the most consistent hunting of Giant Canadas to be found.Rochester offers all the amenities necessary to support the habbits and tastes of a wide variety of waterfowl hunters,you will easily be able to enjoy your stay in Rochester as well as the excellent hunting. Rochester has many times been voted as the Best Place in America to live.
As you can imagine these birds migrate here from areas to the North such as Manitoba sometimes with several stops along the way.The main Duck flyway is some 40 or so from Rochester miles along the Mississippi. The Mississippi River around the Grey Cloud Refuge is one such staging area.Consisting of a large island this area can stage upwards of 100,000 Ducks of all species as well as Geese.Just a 50 minute drive to the River offers fantastic combination Duck and Goose hunts both in the fields adjacent the Mississippi and on the mighty river itself.
The area also offer excellent Whitetail,Turkey,and Pheasant hunting.It is truly a hunters paradise.
